BALTIMORE - The Loyola College men's lacrosse team has today its 2009 schedule, a challenging calendar that includes dates with three of four teams that advanced to the NCAA Semifinals last season, Head Coach Charley Toomey announced today.
"We are excited about our 2009 schedule because we will face the best that college lacrosse has to offer," Toomey said. "I believe that our fans will see a lot of tremendous lacrosse this season, and we can't wait to get started."
The defending ECAC Champions open the 2009 slate with their first-ever game in the state of Georgia when they travel to the Atlanta-area to face Notre Dame in a Valentine's Day neutral-site contest on Saturday, February 14. The teams will square off at McEachern High School in Power Springs, Ga.
Following the date with the Fighting Irish, Loyola will open the home portion of its schedule on Saturday, February 21, against area rival Towson. All Saturday home games at Diane Geppi-Aikens Field are slated to begin at 1 p.m.
The Greyhounds, who advanced to the NCAA Championships for the second year in a row, finished the season with a 7-7 record, hit the road following the match against the Tigers for three-straight road contests, including a ECAC-opening match at Penn State on Saturday, February 28. Loyola then travels to Loudonville, N.Y., to play at Siena on Tuesday, March 3, the first of two mid-week games on the Greyhounds' schedule.
Loyola returns to Durham, N.C., to play Duke, the team that knocked Loyola out of last year's NCAA Championships. The Greyhounds face the Blue Devils, which advanced to the NCAA Final Four, on Saturday, March 7.
The Greyhounds then start a stretch of four-straight home contests on Tuesday, March 10, when it hosts first-year Division I program, Bryant. The Bulldogs advanced to the 2008 NCAA Division II Semifinals.
St. John's is the first of two ECAC contests on Loyola's schedule, beginning on Saturday, March 14. Massachusetts comes to Diane Geppi-Aikens Field on Saturday, March 21.
Toomey and the Greyhounds step out of conference play on Saturday, March 28, to tangle with the defending national champions, Syracuse.
Four ECAC games dot the schedule following the game against the Orange, beginning with a road contest at Rutgers on Saturday, April 4.
A trip to Georgetown is next for Loyola on Saturday, April 11, followed by home match-ups against Fairfield, April 18, and Hobart, April 25.
The Greyhounds close their regular-season on Saturday, May 2, with a Charles Street Challenge at Johns Hopkins, the NCAA runners-up a season ago.
The NCAA Championships begin on Saturday, May 9 and culminate with the NCAA Championship Game on Monday, May 25, in Foxboro, Mass.
