Hoboken, N.J. - The Major League Lacrosse, the premier professional outdoor lacrosse league, completed the 2009 MLL Collegiate Draft on Wednesday evening at the Stevens Institute of Technology and among the 42 players selected were former Loyola standouts P.T. Ricci and Shane Koppens, both May graduates from the College.
Ricci (Wayne Pa./ Conestoga) was selected by the Washington Bayhawks with the second pick of the second round (No. 11 overall). The long-stick midfielder was the first defender taken on the night.
The 2009 ECAC Defensive Player of the Year, he led the nation with 51 caused turnovers while scooping 89 groundballs, second among non face-off specialists nationally. With his help, the Greyhounds ranked third nationally with an average of 38.29 groundballs per game. He also added two goals and five assists.
"It's a great honor to be selected and I couldn't be any happier that it's Washington," said Ricci. "It's close to Loyola and I get to play with Paul Richards (former Loyola midfielder '08) again."
Koppens (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) was taken by the Denver Outlaws in the third round (No. 21 overall). A crafty attackman, he should bring immediate offensive help to the Outlaws.
Despite missing the first two games of the 2009 season, his 41 points (22 goals, 19 assists) led his team for the second straight season. A four-year contributor for Loyola, Koppens finishes his career fourth on the program's all-time assists list with 80 and eighth on the career points list with 151.
The duo of Koppens and Ricci were also named first team All-ECAC selections and USILA Honorable Mention All-Americans.
They will join a number of former Loyola graduates currently in the MLL, including Bobby Horsey '01 (Boston Cannons), Tim Goettelmann '00 (Long Island Lizards), Paul Richards '08 (Washington Bayhawks), and Gavin Prout '02 (Toronto Nationals). Andrew Spack '07 played with the Rochester Rattlers in 2007-08 and Dan Kallaugher 'MBA 07' played with the Chicago Machine from 2007-08.
