CENTERVILLE, Mass. - Loyola University Maryland faceoff specialist John Schiavone was named the ECAC Defensive Player of the Week on Monday after helping the Greyhounds defeat Hobart, 17-12, in conference action on Saturday.
Schiavone won 18-of-28 faceoffs for Loyola, helping the Greyhounds control possession during stretches of the game.
Entering the game, Hobart's Bobby Dattilo was the top-ranked faceoff specialist in the conference, but Schiavone won .648 of the restarts he took against the Statesmen.
He also scooped up a game-high 10 ground balls, his second 10-plus effort of the season.
Schiavone now leads the ECAC, and is seventh in NCAA Division I, in faceoff winning percentage this season (.605).
The award is the first of Schiavone's career and the 10th this season by a Loyola player.
The Greyhounds, who moved up to No. 6 in both the USILA Coaches Poll and the Nike/Inside Lacrosse Media Rankings, travel to Colorado for a 1 p.m. (MT) game on Sunday, May 2, against Denver, in their ECAC finale for 2010.
