Five Loyola Men's Lacrosse Players Earn All-Patriot League Honors

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Three Loyola University Maryland men's lacrosse players -- Pat Frazier (defense), Zach Herreweyers (attack) and Brian Sherlock (midfield) -- were named to the All-Patriot League First Team on Monday, as a League-high five players on the first and second teams represented the Greyhounds.
 
Nikko Pontrello (attack) and Graham Savio (faceoff specialist) joined the trio by garnering second team honors. Loyola's five total honorees were matched by its Patriot League Championships Quarterfinals' opponent, the U.S. Military Academy.
 
The Greyhounds and Army West Point open the tournament Tuesday afternoon with a 4 o'clock faceoff at Ridley Athletic Complex.
 
Frazier has been the Greyhounds' top defender this season, leading close defenders on the team with 43 ground balls. The senior, who has started each of Loyola's last 44 games on close defense, also has caused 14 turnovers and has been an important part of Loyola's transition and clearing game. He has scored a pair of goals and had an assist, as well, this season.
 
Herreweyers enters the Patriot League Championships as the conference's leading goal scorer with 45 through 14 games. His goal total is third-highest in NCAA Division I, and he is eighth in goals per game (3.21). The Canadian has hat tricks in nine games this year, and he has posted three or more goals in better than half (14-of-25) of his career games for the Greyhounds. This season, his 45 goals are tied for sixth-most in school single-season history, and they rank ninth on the Patriot League single-season charts.
 
Sherlock is one of the top offensive midfielders in the sport and leads Patriot League middies with 28 goals this season, a total that puts him in the top-10 nationally amongst his position group. He also has 19 assists this season, bolstered by a career-high five in the regular-season finale on Friday at Bucknell University, for 47 points. He is second in all three scoring categories on the team.
 
Pontrello has led the Greyhounds in assists this season, and he is fourth in the conference with 24. He also has scored 18 goals and is third on the team with 42 points, ranking him 10th in the League with 3.0 points per game. Earlier this season, Pontrello became the eighth player in Loyola history to rank in the top-15 in goals, points and assists. Through the end of the regular-season, he is tied for 11th in points (150), 11th in assists (61) and tied for 13th in goals (89). He will move into the top-10 with five more assists and four more points.
Savio has been a mainstay at the faceoff `X' for the Greyhounds, winning restarts at a 59.5 percent clip (153-of-257) as a sophomore. He also leads the team in ground balls with 66 despite missing two contests this year. In conference play, he is tops in the conference with 7.32 ground balls per game, and he is second in the League with a 65.0 faceoff winning percentage.
