CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - For the second time in as many weeks, a Loyola University Maryland attacker was named the Corvias Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week. Nikko Pontrello garnered this week's honor after combining for five goals and eight assists in two Greyhounds games.
The senior from Marlton, New Jersey, posted a career-high nine points Saturday at Lafayette College, scoring five goals and matching his previous high of four assists.
It was the second game in a row that Pontrello had four assists as he also posted that number Wednesday night against Georgetown University.
Through nine games this season, Pontrello leads Loyola in points (36) and assists (21), and his 15 goals scored are fourth on the team. Against the Leopards, he scored moved into the top-15 in career goals and points at Loyola and became the eighth Greyhounds player to be in the top-15 at the school in all-time points, goals and assists.
On Saturday at Lafayette, Pontrello tallied three of his goals during a 7-0 Loyola run in the second quarter that saw the Greyhounds go from three down to four up in the span of less than seven minutes. He then had all four of his assists in the second half built its lead to the eventual final score of 19-10.
Pontrello is currently tied for 12th in all-time points (144) and is 13th in assists (58) and 15th in goals (86).
The award was the third Corvias Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week honor this year for the Greyhounds. Pontrello's linemate Zach Herreweyers has won the other two.
He and the Greyhounds return to the field Saturday, March 28, to host Colgate University at 2:30 p.m. The game will be televised nationally on CBS Sports Network from Ridley Athletic Complex.
