Baltimore, Md. - Senior goalie Michael Fretwell was named the ECAC Defensive Player of the Week today after helping the Greyhounds secure a 6-5 win over league foe St. John's on Saturday. Fretwell, who made a season-high 16 saves in the win, is the first Greyhounds to receive weekly honors this season.
Fretwell made nine of his 16 saves in the second half, closing the door on St. John's with big stop after big stop in the fourth quarter. Clinging on to its one-goal lead, Fretwell made two saves in the final two minutes to give Loyola its second league win of the season.
Named 2005 ECAC Goalie of the Year, Fretwell is also the preseason favorite to take home goalie of the year honors in 2006. After five games this season, he boasts a 7.64 goals-against average and a .633 save percentage. In league games, Fretwell is even better, stopping 74 percent of the shots he sees while holding opponents to 5.5 goals per game.
