CENTERVILLE, Mass. - Loyola University Maryland sophomore attacker Mike Sawyer (Waxhaw, N.C./Charlotte Catholic H.S.) was named the ECAC Lacrosse League Co-Offensive Player of the Week on Monday, the conference office announced.
Sawyer, the 2009 ECAC Rookie of the Year, led all players with three goals on Saturday as the Greyhounds rallied from a five-goal deficit to defeat Navy, 9-8, at Ridley Athletic Complex.
After Navy scored the game's first four goals, Sawyer put Loyola on the board with an extra-man goal in the second quarter. Loyola would end up going down 7-2 with more than five minutes to play before halftime, but Sawyer and his teammates staged a huge comeback.
He ripped a 15-yard shot from the left side to cut the Midshipmen's lead to 7-4 with 6:46 to play in the third quarter. Sawyer then gave the Greyhounds their first lead of the season with 11:33 to play in the fourth.
Sawyer was also key to Loyola's possession game. The Greyhounds had the ball for more than 21 of the 30 minutes in the second half, and they picked up 21 ground balls to Navy's three after the break. He grabbed a career-high four ground balls in the game.
He shared the weekly honors with Ohio State midfielder Jarred Bowman.
Loyola, which moved up one spot in this week's Nike/Inside Lacrosse Media Rankings to No. 13, returns to action on Saturday when the Greyhounds travel four miles North to face Towson at 12 p.m. The game will be aired live in the Baltimore area on WMAR/ABC-2, and the national audience can check out the contest on ESPN3.com.
