CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - For the third time in as many years, Loyola University Maryland men's lacrosse was picked by Patriot League coaches and sports information personnel as the team to beat in the conference.

The Greyhounds garnered 12 first-place votes and took the top spot in the poll with 122 points, 14 more than the second-place U.S. Naval Academy.

Senior attacker Zach Herreweyers was named the Patriot League Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, and he was joined on the Preseason All-Patriot League Team by junior midfielder Brian Sherlock.

Herreweyers returns to the Greyhounds offensive unit after leading all Patriot League players with 47 goals in 2015. The native of London, Ontario, was seventh in NCAA Division I with 3.13 goals per game, a number that also paced the Patriot League. He recorded hat tricks in nine of the Greyhounds' 15 games during 2015, and in 26 career games, Herreweyers has scored 66 goals, recording three or more 14 times.

Sherlock has earned All-Patriot League First Team honors after his freshman and sophomore seasons, and he garnered United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) All-America Honorable Mention following the 2015 campaign. The Long Islander was the top goal-scoring midfielder in the Patriot League, registering 29 to go with 19 assists for 48 points last year.

The Greyhounds have been picked to win the Patriot League all three seasons they have been a part of the conference. They took the crown in 2014 and finished fourth last year with an overall record of 7-8.

Head Coach Charley Toomey and his program return eight of 10 starts from a year ago, plus David Manning, a now senior defender who missed the 2015 season due to an injury after starting every game in 2014.

Loyola and Navy led the preseason poll; Colgate University was close behind the Midshipmen in third with 105 points. The U.S. Military Academy checked in at fourth with 85, and Bucknell University was fifth with 70. Boston University (58), Lehigh University (54), College of the Holy Cross (29) and Lafayette College (17) rounded out the poll.

The Greyhounds start their season Saturday, Feb. 13, when they face the University of Virginia. Loyola's home schedule commences a week later in a local tilt against Johns Hopkins University on Saturday, Feb. 20. Patriot League action gets underway seven days later when the Greyhounds host Lafayette College Saturday, Feb. 27.
