BALTIMORE - Loyola University Maryland men's lacrosse will host three teams that participated in last year's NCAA Championships as part of a seven-game home slate that also features local rivals and ECAC foes, Head Coach Charley Toomey announced today.
The Greyhounds open the 2012 season on Saturday, February 18, when they resume a rivalry with last year's Colonial Athletic Association champion Delaware.
Loyola will welcome the Blue Hens to Ridley Athletic Complex at 1 o'clock for the 29th all-time meeting between the teams that have not faced each other since the 2003 season.
The game against Delaware is the first of seven home contests at Ridley and 13 regular-season games that will prepare the Greyhounds for the ECAC Championships to be contested in Denver.
"I think that our fans will be excited for this home schedule that features several teams that played in the NCAA Championships, as well traditional rivals like Towson and Georgetown," Toomey said. "We are pleased to bring Delaware and UMBC back onto the schedule after not playing them for the last several years. They are talented programs that will continue to boost our strength of schedule."
Following the Delaware game, Loyola will face its second CAA opponent in as many weeks when Towson comes to Ridley on Saturday, February 25, also at 1 o'clock.
From there, the Greyhounds head on the road for the first time in 2012, playing a pair of games away from Baltimore.
Loyola will open its seventh season in the ECAC Lacrosse League when it plays in Louisville, Ky., at Bellarmine on Friday, March 2, at 7 o'clock.
The Greyhounds next face a future ECAC opponent, Michigan, in the Wolverines' first NCAA Division I home game. Loyola will play in Oosterbaan Field House on Wednesday, March 7.
"We are looking forward to welcoming Michigan to the conference, and we are honored to be their first home opponent," Toomey said.
Loyola returns to Ridley Athletic Complex for three-straight home games, beginning with a Saturday, March 10, outing against 2011 Final Four contestant Duke. The Greyhounds and Blue Devils will face off on Awalt Field at 12 noon.
Air Force will visit Ridley on Saturday, March 21, for another 12 noon game, before the Greyhounds host Georgetown under the lights on Wednesday, March 21, at 7 o'clock.
Another rivalry will be renewed on Saturday, March 24, when Loyola travels across town to play at UMBC in a 7 o'clock date. The Greyhounds and Retrievers have faced other 29 times, the last coming in 2005.
Loyola returns home for a Saturday, March 31, ECAC game against Ohio State at 1 o'clock before going on the road for three out-of-state games.
First up is a Saturday, April 7, contest at 1 o'clock against Fairfield, followed by a 7 o'clock game against 2011 Final Four participant Denver on Saturday, April 14. The Greyhounds wrap up the road trip on Saturday, April 21, with a 12 noon game at Hobart to close their ECAC schedule.
Loyola will host its first-ever Homecoming on Saturday, April 28, when the Greyhounds take on nearby foe Johns Hopkins at 1 o'clock. School-wide festivities will surround the event that will be the final regular-season game of the year for Loyola.
The following weekend, the ECAC will hold its second championship tournament with the top-four teams in the regular-season playing on at Denver.
