CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Loyola University Maryland sophomore Matt Oshrine became the first Patriot League golfer to pick up three monthly accolades throughout their career, being tabbed the Corvias Patriot League Golfer of the Month for October, as announced by the league office Thursday.
Oshrine is also just the second golfer in league history to repeat after also taking the award in September.
Loyola’s top finisher through all three October events, Oshrine picked up top-six finishes at each of the NC State, Maryland and Florida Gulf Coast tournaments. The Baltimore, Maryland native broke par through five of the nine rounds, beat two players ranked in the top-50 of the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings and finished the month with a 71. 66 stroke average.
At NC State’s Wolfpack Intercollegiate (Oct. 6-7), Oshrine picked up a win over No. 43 Scott Wolfes (Georgia Southern) with a 3-under 210, which placed him fifth out of the 93 competitors. Oshrine sandwiched a pair of 2-under 69s around a second-round score of 1-over 72 to finish two strokes back of the medalist, No. 21 Adrian Meronk (ETSU), and one behind No. 44 Wesley Conover (ECU).
Oshrine followed that up by shooting another two rounds under par at the Maryland Invitational (Oct. 13-14) for a 1-over 217, which put him in a tie for third out of the 75 golfers. He carded round scores of 2-under 70, 4-over 76 and 1-under 71, respectively, to lead Loyola to a runner-up finish at the event.
In the fall finale at Florida Gulf Coast (Oct. 27-28), Oshrine picked up another top-50 win, beating No. 28 Rowin Caron of Florida State. Oshrine shot rounds of 2-over 74, 1-over 73 and 1-under 71 to finish tied for sixth out of 77 players with a 2-over 218.
Oshrine led the Greyhounds through all five tournaments this fall, finishing with nine rounds under par, a 70.26 stroke average, his first collegiate tournament win – St. John’s The Gimmler, and a new 54-hole school record (16-under 192). He went 2-3-0 against top-50 opponents and 7-5-2 vs. players ranked in the top-100 nationally. Through all five events, he posted an overall record of 335-16-3.
This marks the third career weekly award for Oshrine and his second of the season, as he picked up the league’s honor for September. He was also tabbed the Patriot League Golfer of the Month for March last year.
The Greyhounds have concluded the fall portion of their schedule and will take the winter off before returning to the course in February for the start of their spring season. Loyola will begin play by hosting the three-day Snowman Getaway in Goodyear, Arizona on Sunday Feb. 22.
