BALTIMORE - The Loyola University Maryland men’s golf team travels to Seaside, Calif., this weekend as they Greyhounds wrap up the fall schedule at the Saint Mary’s College Invitational on Monday and Tuesday.
Loyola will compete in a 15-team field with some of the top teams from around the country as play spans three rounds over two courses. The Greyhounds begin the tournament at 11 a.m. on Monday at the 11th hole of the Bayonet Golf Course and are paired with UC Irvine and Notre Dame, who hold the No. 27 ranking in the Golfstat Head-to-Head Rankings.
“We’re excited about playing against such good competition,” said Head Coach Chris Baloga. “When you’re playing against the best players, it lets you see where you stand in comparison to them.”
Loyola checks in at No. 175 in the Golfstat rankings and No. 197 in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings, but Baloga said that playing in a tournament with five teams in Golfstat’s top 100 will improve the Greyhounds’ strength of schedule, a key component in the ranking process.
Baloga will send the same five players that competed in Loyola’s last event.
Ryan McCarthy (Silver Spring, Md./Gonzaga College H.S.) will look to end the fall on a high note. The junior leads the Greyhounds in stroke average and has finished in the top 15 of the last two tournaments, after taking 11th place at the Joe Agee Invitational and fourth place at the Hartford Hawks Invitational.
Jonathan Ross (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) has played his way onto Loyola’s top squad this fall after making one appearance last spring. Ross, a sophomore, aims to build on an 13th place finish and his first round under par at the Joe Agee Invitational on October 9 and 10.
Alex Redfearn (Boynton Beach, Fla./Pope John Paul II) enters the Saint Mary’s College Invitational with the team’s second-best stroke average and the most rounds under par, with two. Redfearn also shares the season-low round and has finished in the top 25 in all four events this season.
Patrick McCormick (Weston, Fla./University School) and Jay Mulieri (Silver Spring, Md./Gonzaga College H.S.) round out Loyola’s tournament squad. McCormick led the Greyhounds with an eighth-place finish in the team’s first fall event and has worked to get back to that form, highlighted with a round of 69 at The McLaughlin on September 17 and 18. Mulieri has compiled two top-25 finishes in the fall and has the third-best stroke average on the team.
Teams at the Invitational will play the first 18 holes at Bayonet Golf Course before playing the second 18 at Blackhorse Golf Course. The final round begins at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at Bayonet Golf Course and Baloga hopes to see his team in contention.
“We’re trying to come out and open with a good first round, so that last day we’ll have a chance to make a run,” Baloga said. “If we’re under 300 every round, we should put ourselves in decent position.”
Live hole-by-hole scoring of the tournament will be available at the Golfstat Results website.
