Golfers Go West For Monday's Santa Clara Invitational

Oct. 17, 2008

Baltimore, Md. - The Loyola golf team heads cross-country Friday to begin preparation for the Santa Clara Invitational in Santa Clara, Calif. The two-day event, held at the Silver Creek Valley Golf Club, tees off Monday and will field nine teams.

The Greyhounds are coming off a very respectable performance at the Weibring Intercollegiate last weekend in Norman, Ill. All five of the team's players shot 74 or better through the first two rounds. On the final day, Loyola fired a team-total 298 to take home fifth-place honors among 15 teams.

The hope is that the youthful Greyhounds, who feature three freshmen and a sophomore, can carry over the same quality of play to the West Coast.

"The Santa Clara is a great event and a wonderful golf course," Head Coach Tom Beidleman said. "I'm looking forward to building from the momentum of our play in Illinois and improving in California."

At nearly 7,000 yards in distance, Santa Clara should present its challenges to the field. The course has hosted qualifying rounds for events including the AT&T Pro-Am, California State Amateur and the USGA Mid-Am.

Loyola will send four of the same players who went to Weibring--Michael Mulieri, Alex Redfearn, Ryan McCarthy and Jay Mulieri--with freshman Michael O'Keith rounding out the group in place of freshman Patrick McCormick.

Senior Michael Mulieri paced the Greyhounds in last weekend's tournament. He finished ninth in individual play with a three-round score of 214. His younger brother, freshman Jay Mulieri, had a team-low 72 in the final-round and finished with a 222.

Redfearn, a sophomore, carded the second-best score at Weibring, with a 220 (72-73,75). McCarthy, a freshman, fired a 222 (74-70-78) and McCormick rounded out the scoring with a 225 (72-74-79) to finish in a tie for 45th.

The following teams will also be competing at Santa Clara: Academy of the Arts, Boise State, British Columbia, Cal State Bakersfield, Cal State San Marcos, Kansas State, Sacramento State and South Dakota State. Tee-time is scheduled for 8 a.m. Monday.
