North Falmouth, Mass. - Freshmen Ryan McCarthy and Jay Mulieri were the top Loyola scorers through the first half of the rain-shortened Hawks Invitational played Monday afternoon at Ballymeade Country Club as the Greyhounds ended the day tied for 15th among the 23 participating teams. After Sunday's play was washed out, the event is now a 36-hole affair with the final 18 holes scheduled to take place Tuesday.
McCarthy, seeing his first action of the season and playing the first round of his college career, finished with a three-over-par 75 to post the top Loyola score, ranking in a tie for 34th among the field. Behind him were Jay Mulieri and sophomore Alex Redfearn, each of whom carded 78s to sit in a tie for 61st overall. The final Greyhounds score among the scoring quartet came from senior Mike Mulieri who was one shot behind them at 79 to tie for 71st. Freshman Patrick McCormick, also seeing his first action of the season and his career, rounded out the Loyola quintet with an 87 to sit in a tie for 113th.
The Greyhounds' score of 310 tied them for 15th with Weber State and bettered both of their playing partners, ranking ahead of Seton Hall, which finished in a tie for 17th, and Bryant, which sat 20th. Baylor leads all teams after combining for a 284, eight shots better than second-place teams Texas Christian and Rhode Island.
