Baltimore, Md. - The Loyola men's golf team opens its 2005-06 season at the Navy Fall Invitational this Saturday at 10 a.m. The Greyhounds, paired up with host Navy and local-foe Towson on Day One, play 18 holes on Saturday and close with 18 on Sunday at the U.S. Naval Academy Golf Club in Annapolis, Md.
"It's always a strong field at Navy," says Loyola Head Coach Tom Beidleman. "We know the course pretty well and are very excited to get going this season."
Loyola comes in with junior captain Will Shriver in the No. 1 slot. Sophomore Matt Bassler, Chris Derby and Nick Brassill will open the year at 2-3-4 while freshman Blake Furgerson gets his first collegiate start at No. 5. Last season, the `Hounds opened with an eight-place showing at the Navy Fall Invitational with Bassler earning runner-up honors with his Round Two score of 68.
This weekend's golf tournament will have 15 teams and a strong regional showing. Navy's Golf Club is a par-71, 6.611-yard course. Loyola will tee off from No. 1 on Saturday with Sunday's times and pairings determined by Day One standings.
