BETHLEHEM, Pennsylvania - Loyola University Maryland golf coach Chris Baloga has advanced to the match play portion of the 2014 U.S. Mid-Amateur at the Saucon Valley Country Club after finishing stroke play in a tie for 29th place.
Baloga, playing in his first Mid-Amateur, carded a 2-over 73 through the first round on Saturday and followed it up with a 4-over 75 today to finish the two days in a 14-way tie for 29th at 6-over 148.
With his finish, Baloga – the 2014 Patriot League Coach of the Year – was one of the low 64 scores in the field of 264 players that will advance to match play. Baloga begins the knockout competition at 8:40 a.m., Monday morning and will face Denver Haddix, who finished tied for 21st at 5-over 147. The winner will advance to Tuesday’s second round. The overall champion will be determined on Thursday and will earn an automatic invitation to play in the Masters Tournament.
Baloga qualified for the Mid-Amateur, which is open to the top amateur players who are 25 years of age or older, by winning a playoff hole at Carlisle Country Club on August 1.
