Shuart Opens U.S. Amateur With Round Of 78

Mamaroneck, N.Y. - T.J. Shuart opened play at the 104th U.S. Amateur Open with a round of 78 on Winged Foot's West Course in Mamaroneck, N.Y. on Monday. One of 26 golfers to score a 78 on Day One, Shuart tees off from Winged Foot's East Course at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday.The Loyola senior posted a 38 on the front nine, battling high winds and rain all afternoon. A 40 on the back nine gave Shuart a respectable score on what is considered the tougher of Winged Foot's two championship courses."T.J. played very well today," says Loyola Head Coach Tom Beidleman. "He made a few mistakes which can really cost you at Winged Foot, but overall he played very good."With 36 golfers still on the golf course, play was suspended Monday night due to lightning. Those players resume their rounds at 8 a.m. Tuesday morning. Oscar Alvarez of Colombia currently leads the field after shooting a 67 on the East Course.Following the second round of stroke play, the field of 312 golfers will be trimmed to the lowest 64 scorers who will advance to match play. The championship continues through Sunday's scheduled 36-hole final match.The U.S. Amateur is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association.
