TOWSON, Md. - Former Loyola University Maryland golfer Will Shriver defeated the current Greyhounds' head coach, Chris Baloga, in a playoff to capture the 2011 Maryland Mid-Amateur Championship on Tuesday at Towson Golf and Country Club.
Shriver, who won the 2007 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship weeks before he graduated from Loyola, shot 2-under par 69 in the final round to tie Baloga at 141 for the tournament.
Baloga, who won the Mid-Amateur last year, was tied with Ray Sheedy at 1-under 70 after the first round of the event, and he shot an even-par 71 in the second and final round.
Another former Loyola golfer, Matt Bassler '08, finished tied for ninth at 4-over par.
The Maryland Mid-Amateur title is the second major state crown of Shriver's career. He also won the Maryland Amateur in 2003 before entering Loyola.
Earlier this summer, Baloga won the Maryland Amateur Stroke Play Championship at Mount Pleasant Golf Course.
Entering his second season as the head coach at Loyola, Baloga and the Greyhounds will open their 2011-2012 schedule on September 12 at the Maryland Intercollegiate in Cambridge, Md.
