Derby Completes Loyola Trio Of U.S. Amateur Qualifiers

Aug. 4, 2008

Chris Derby, who completed his collegiate eligibility and earned his bachelor's degree from Loyola College in May, shot two sub-70 rounds at the U.S. Amateur Sectional Qualifier today at the Dupont Country Club in Wilmington, Del.

Derby had only one bogey in 36 holes of golf on the par-71 course, shooting 69 and 68, and qualified for the 2008 U.S. Amateur Golf Championship that will be held August 18-24 at the Pinehurst Resort in the Village of Pinehurst, N.C.

Derby became the third former Greyhounds golfer to qualifier for this year's Amateur. His classmate Matt Bassler and 2005 graduate T.J. Shuart each qualified last weekend.

Bassler shot a two-round, 5-under par total at the Sparrows Point Country Club in the Maryland sectional, while Shuart won a three-man playoff at the Louisiana sectional.

The trio will begin two days of stroke play on Pinehurst's No. 2 and 4 courses on August 18. The leading 64 competitors will then start match play until a champion is crowned.

Derby and Bassler helped Loyola win the 2008 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship earlier this year. Bassler finished tied for third, and Derby tied for 10th, at the event.
