July 29, 2008

Baltimore, Md. - Former Loyola golfers Matt Bassler and T.J. Shuart have qualified for the 2008 U.S. Amateur Tournament at Pinehurst this August. Both Bassler and Shuart posted rounds of 71 and 68 in a 36-hole qualifier, each at separate qualifying locations.

Bassler, a senior co-captain this past season, posted his five-under par qualifying score in the Maryland Regional in Baltimore. Shuart, meanwhile, notched his position in the U.S. Amateur by winning a three-man playoff in the Louisiana Regional.

Shuart, the 2004 MAAC Champion and Loyola's team captain and leader during the 2004 and 2005 seasons, finished an impressive college career with a 75.2 career stroke average at Evergreen. Bassler and Shuart were teammates at Loyola during the 2004-05 season.

The 2008 U.S. Amateur will take place August 18-24 on Pinehurst's Championship Courses No. 2 and No. 4. A total of 312 amateurs will compete in a 36-hole elimination stroke play tournament on Monday and Tuesday to cut the field the 64. Match play begins on Wednesday and continues until the 36-hole final on Sunday.
