Former Golfer Bassler Wins Maryland Open

Phoenix, Md. - Former Loyola golfer Matt Bassler won the Maryland Open today at Hillendale Country Club by two strokes, while 2009 alum Michael Mulieri finished in a tie for fifth place.

Bassler, an amateur from Catonsville, Md., representing Rolling Road Golf Club, finished the 54-hole tournament at 3-under par, edging runner-up Brent Martin by two strokes. He shot 70-69-71.

Bassler ended the tournament by draining a 25-foot birdie putt at the 18th hole after Martin had pulled to within one stroke with a birdie on the 17th.

Bassler graduated from Loyola in 2008 and was a co-captain his senior season, when he led the Greyhounds to the MAAC Championship. That year he also qualified for the U.S. Amateur at Pinehurst along with former teammate Chris Derby. He is currently the program director for the First Tee of Baltimore.

Mulieri finished in a four-way tie for fifth place at 2-over. The two-time MAAC Championship winner shot 74-68-73. He represented TPC Potomac.
