ROCKVILLE, Md. - Loyola University Maryland Head Golf Coach Chris Baloga recently led the Greyhounds to their fourth-straight NCAA Championships appearance, but he will be vying for another Championship this weekend.
The first-year head coach is one of 112 golfers slated to play for a spot in the 2011 U.S. Open Championship at the Rockville, Md., Sectional Qualifier on Monday, June 6.
Baloga, the reigning Maryland Amateur Player of the Year, shot a 2-under par 70 on May 10 at Lake Presidential Golf Club in Upper Marlboro, Md., in a local qualifier to earn a spot in the sectional.
Last year, Baloga won the Maryland Mid-Amateur and played in the 2010 U.S. Amateur Championship. In past years, he has won the Baltimore City Amateur, the Maryland Amateur Stroke Play Championship and the Middle Atlantic Amateur Championship, among other events.
Of the 112 golfers slated to tee off at Woodmont Country Club on Monday, 10 will earn bids to the U.S. Open. Baloga will face several professionals and PGA Tour mainstays at the sectional, including Guy Boros, Bubba Dickerson, Brad Faxon, Fred Funk and Jason Gore.
