May 22, 2014

NORMAN, Okla. - The Loyola University Maryland golf team had three Greyhounds – senior Brendan Lemp, junior Bart George and freshman Matt Oshrine – named to the Division I PING All-Northeast Region Team, as announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) Thursday.

Yale led the region with four selections, while the Greyhounds were the only other school with more than two honorees. Columbia, Harvard, Maryland, Penn State, and St. John’s all had two golfers honored, while Army, Drexel, Hartford, Princeton, Rutgers, Sacred Heart, Seton Hall and Temple had one each.

The three honorees are also the most for the Greyhounds under head coach Chris Baloga.

Lemp, a native of West Hartford, Conn., concluded his career by becoming the first-ever Loyola golfer to shoot par-or-better through an NCAA Regional Championship. Lemp carded a season-best 5-under 67 through the final round in Columbia to finish tied for 26th overall with an even 216. A first-team All-Patriot League performer after finishing fifth at the conference tournament, Lemp led the Greyhounds through four tournaments this year and shot eight rounds at par-or-better. He concluded the season with a 73.41 stroke average and was an honorable mention for Patriot League Golfer of the Month in April.

George competed in his third-straight NCAA Regional Championship this year and wrapped up the season with a 74.89 stroke average after finishing 62nd with a 13-over 229 in Columbia. After missing the majority of the fall season, George carded two rounds at par-or-under through the spring and was Loyola’s top finisher at two tournaments and was among the team’s top two in four of the last six events. At the Patriot League Championships, the Arnold, Md., native just missed finishing in the top 10, finishing tied with teammate Connor Flach for 11th at 12-over 222.

Oshrine led the team with a 73.00 stroke average and 17 rounds at par-or-under this year and tied sophomore Jimmy Dengler as the team’s top finisher at the Patriot League Championships. The Baltimore, Md., put in a strong finish to the two-day tournament, tying the final day’s low-round score of 1-under 69 to finish in a tie for third at 5-over 215, earning him first-team All-Patriot League honors. At the NCAA Regional Championships, Oshrine finished second on the team, and 73rd overall, with a 5-over 221. Throughout the season, Oshrine earned Patriot League Golfer of the Month honors for March and was Loyola’s top finisher through three tournaments, including the Pinehurst Intercollegiate – the site of this year’s US Open.

Throughout the year, Loyola earned seven top-five finishes in 12 tournaments, including winning its seventh-straight conference championship. The Greyhounds won the Patriot League title in their inaugural year in the league and advanced to their seventh-straight NCAA Regional Championship, where they finished 13th, and just four strokes out of 10th place, in the Columbia Regional.
