EXTON, Pa. - Loyola University Maryland head golf coach Chris Baloga earned runner-up honors at yesterday’s qualifying round for the U.S. Open at Exton’s Whitford Country Club. With the second-place finish, Baloga snagged one of five qualifying positions available to the field of 77 for next month’s sectional qualifier, the last step in trying to gain a spot in U.S. Open.
Baloga will advance to compete in the sectional round at Old Oaks Country Club and Centry Country Club in Purchase, N.Y., on June 3. The 113th U.S. Open is set for June 13-16 at Merion Golf Club.
Despite never playing at Whitford Country Club before, Baloga carded a round score of 1-over 73 to trail Michael Brown’s even 72 by one stroke. Also moving one step closer to the U.S. Open are amateurs Blake Morris and David West, in addition to professional John Ladow.
Baloga and the Greyhounds are currently on their way to Tallahassee, Fla., for the 2013 NCAA Regional Championships. Play begins on Thursday, May 16 and will conclude Saturday, May 18.
