Men's Golf Headed To NCAA Central Regional

May 9, 2005

Baltimore, Md. - The Loyola College men's golf team will play in the NCAA Central Region next Thursday-Saturday, May 19-21. The 27-team regional field, which was announced today, has Loyola listed as a No. 27 seed. The Greyhounds, who have won the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) three years in a row, will be playing in their third straight NCAA Tournament.

"I'm pleased with our selection," says Loyola Head Coach Tom Beidleman. "The Warren Golf Course is very similar to the courses we play on the East Coast and it suits our style of play."

The Central Regional is hosted by Notre Dame and will be held at the Warren Golf Course in South Bend, Ind. The field, which has Oklahoma State, Augusta State and TCU as its top three seeds, is one of three NCAA Regionals. The East Regional, hosted by the Southeastern Conference (SEC) will be held at the Golf Club of Tennessee in Nashville, while the West Regional will be hosted by Stanford University on its own Stanford Golf Course in Palo Alto, Calf.

Loyola would need to finish in the Top-10 of its region to qualify for the NCAA Championships hosted by Loyola at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Md. The NCAA Championships will be held June 1-4.

"We're approaching this like any other tournament," says sophomore Will Shriver. "Although it would be very cool to advance and come back home to play in the NCAA Final, we can't have that distraction effect how we play in the regionals."

The Greyhounds completed the 2004-05 season with an all-time best No. 10 ranking in the Mid-Atlantic Region. Loyola, which won its third straight MAAC Tournament at Disney's Magnolia Course back on April 24, closed out the spring with Top-5 finishes in each of its final three events, winning the Drew Upton Memorial and MAAC Championship tournaments.

Shuart has been Loyola's team leader all season.

Loyola placed 26th in last year's West Regional with a three-day score of 952. Returning three of its five starters from that tournament, including seniors T.J. Shuart and David Atkinson, who are coming off second-place finishes at the MAAC Championships. Will Shriver also played in last year's West Regional and was Loyola's top scorer at the tournament with a 72-hole score of 231.

"Having already played in the NCAA Tournament is a big benefit," says Shriver. "Just knowing how everything is structured and how the tournament is set up should make a big difference. I believe it will help David [Atkinson], T.J. [Shuart] and myself."

The Greyhounds will also be sending a pair of freshmen to this year's regional in Chris Derby and Matt Bassler. Derby took medalist honors at the Fort Lauderdale Spring Classic in March and both golfers are coming off Top-10 finishes at the conference tournament.

"The NCAA Tournament is a great experience," says Beidleman. "Our guys have played for this tournament all season and we're fortunate to still be playing while so many other good teams are not."

"We're not putting a lot of pressure on ourselves," adds Atkinson. "We feel we have a great squad and we're going to Notre Dame to play some golf. It should be a lot of fun."

Live scoring for the tournament will be available on Loyola's official athletic Website, Check back for more details and tee times when they become available.
