Baltimore, Md. - Loyola freshman Jay Mulieri was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference golfer of the month for March, the organization announced on Tuesday.
Mulieri, a native of Silver Spring, Md., and one of four Loyola golfers from Gonzaga College High School, averaged a 76.5 in Loyola's two events in March. At the Towson Invitational, he shot rounds of 76-71-75 (222) to finish tied for 15th with fellow freshman Ryan McCarthy for team-best honors.
His 1-under par 71 in the second round tied his brother, Mike, for the lowest round at the tournament by a Loyola player. The Greyhounds posted their best overall showing of the spring season at Towson, finishing in seventh place out of 18 teams, while edging out programs like Georgetown and Boston College.
Earlier in the month, Mulieri shot rounds of 81-77-79 to card a 237 at the CSUMB Invitational, which was hosted at the challenging Prospect Bay Country Club in Seaside, Calif. He finished second-best on the team to end up in 33rd place.
The Greyhounds return to the links on Monday at the Charleston Southern Invitational at the Coosaw Creek Country Club in Charleston, S.C. Loyola will play a practice round on Sunday, followed by two rounds on Monday starting at 9 a.m. and a final round Tuesday.
