TAMPA, Fla. - The Loyola University Maryland men's golf team begins its spring season on Friday with a trip to Tampa, Fla., to play in The Match Play at TPC Tampa Bay.
The Greyhounds will take on Campbell in the first round of the event, which pits five golfers against another team's five in a match play format and the team with three winners wins the match. Campbell and Loyola will tee off at 8:40 a.m. on Friday.
Campbell enters The Match Play ranked at No. 86 in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings, while Loyola occupies the No. 204 spot. All teams play four matches regardless of win and loss results. Kennesaw State and Charleston Southern face off in the opposite bracket.
"It's a unique format, and all that matters is if you win or lose the hole, so if you triple bogey you just lose the hole and you don't play yourself out of it immediately," said Head Coach Chris Baloga. "This is a good format for us to start with after the winter as we haven't been able to play outside."
USF and DePaul will host the event that features Villanova, Ball State, Notre Dame, Kennesaw State, Xavier, Cincinnati, Campbell, Cleveland State, Connecticut, St. John's, Charleston Southern, Marquette, Morehead State in addition to Loyola.
The event will mark the first for the Greyhounds since playing in the Saint Mary's College Invitational at the end of October.
"We've been working pretty hard in the swing room over the winter," Baloga said. "It's tough when you can't play outside, though, because you can't work on things like your short game inside."
Loyola plays a practice round on Thursday before beginning play on Friday morning at 8:40 a.m.
