First Day of Saint Mary's Invitational Sees Golf in 13th

SEASIDE, Calif. - Ryan McCarthy (above) carded a 2-under par second round and the Loyola University Maryland men’s golf team finished in a tie for 13th on the first day of the St. Mary’s Invitational at the Bayonet and Blackhorse Golf Courses in Seaside, Calif.

Loyola shot a 312 on the par-72 courses before responding in impressive fashion with a 297 to finish the first day in a tie for 13th with 33-over 609. The Greyhounds find themselves in a tightly-packed group in the 15-team field, with only four strokes separating the squad from 11th-place teams UC Irvine and Cal Poly at the prestigious event.

The Greyhounds played the first round on the Bayonet Golf Course before moving to Blackhorse Golf Course for the second round of the day.

Ryan McCarthy (Silver Spring, Md./Gonzaga College H.S) tied for his best round of the fall with his second-round effort of a 2-under 70 to finish in a tie for 23rd on the day. After shooting a 7-over 79 on the first round, McCarthy scattered three birdies over the second 18 holes to lead the Greyhounds with the team’s best score. McCarthy is currently 5-over for the tournament.

Jay Mulieri (Silver Spring, Md./Gonzaga College H.S.) turned in a solid performance with a 7-over 151 to tie for 41st. Mulieri opened the tournament with a 3-over 75, a round that featured strong and consistent play throughout and paired that round with a 4-over 76.

Alex Redfearn (Boynton Beach, Fla./Pope John Paul II) sits one shot back of Mulieri after the first day after shooting an 8-over 152. Redfearn’s score places him in a tie for 46th. The senior netted five birdies in the second round en route to a 3-over 75, an improvement over the first 18 holes where he recorded two birdies and shot a 5-over 77.

Patrick McCormick (Weston, Fla./University School) bounced back from an opening-round 81 with a 4-over 76 to tie for 74th after the first day. McCormick recorded one of the Greyhounds’ four first-round birdies and carries an overall score of 157 into the final round.

Jonathan Ross (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) rounded out the Greyhounds’ representation with rounds of 83 and 77 to finish in a tie for 79th. Ross registered two birdies on Monday, one in each round.

The final round of the Invitational begins with a shotgun start on the Bayonet Golf Course at 11 a.m. Eastern time. Live hole-by-hole scoring can be viewed on the Golfstat results site.
