Crowne-d Champions

Oct. 11, 2005

Pittsburgh, Pa. - Junior captain Will Shriver led a furious Loyola rally with his one-under 71 on Tuesday as the Greyhounds erased a 13-stroke deficit to win the 2005 Crowne Plaze Colonial Golf Classic at Montour Heights Country Club in Pittsburgh, Pa.

"I think that today we saw what this team is capable of," says Loyola Golf Coach Tom Beidleman. "Montour Heights can be a very difficult golf course and leaving here with a championship is a perfect way to wrap up the fall schedule."

The Greyhounds used a total team effort in Tuesday's impressive rally, posting five scores in the 70's to have four players finish in the field's top nine. The course played tough throughout the tournament, making it even longer than it's advertised distance of 6,795 yards because of soggy conditions. It allowed just two sub-par rounds, playing to an average of 79.54 and forcing 25 hole scores of triple-bogey or worse.

Loyola, however seemed unaffected on Tuesday, firing a tournament record score of 292. Freshman Michael Mulieri shot an even-par 72 on Day Two and finished with Loyola's top tournament score, placing fourth overall with a 36-hole score of 150.

Sophomore Chris Derby, who led Loyola with a 74 on Monday, closed out the tournament with 152 and tied for seventh overall. Sophomore Matt Bassler posted a 74 on Tuesday and tied Shriver for ninth among all individuals. Classmate Nick Brassill also finished strong, registering a 75 in his final round.

The Greyhounds, who leapfrogged Robert Morris, Toronto and Day One leader Dayton, scored a tournament total of 602, two shy of the tournament record set by Oakland in 2004. Dayton, which led Loyola by 13 strokes after 18 holes, finished with a 605.

The tournament championship is Loyola's first of the season and for the third consecutive year, the Greyhounds close the fall with a team title. Loyola begins spring competition at the Pala Mesa Invitational in Fallbrook, Calif. in Mid-February.
