Baltimore, Md. - Sophomore Chris Derby fired a four-under 68 on Tuesday at the Joe Agee Invitational in Williamsburg, Va., helping Loyola place eighth while taking runner-up honors in the individual medalist standings.
Derby, who posted rounds of 70 and 75 on Monday, matched the best score of the tournament on Tuesday while leading the field in par-3 scoring. Finishing one-under par on Two Rivers' par-3s, Derby ended the tournament with a 213, three strokes back of champion Brian Carroll of George Washington.
Junior captain Will Shriver continued his solid play, scoring his best round of the event, matching freshman Michael Mullieri with a final-round 74. Mullieri closed out the two-day tournament with a 222 while Shiver scored a 227 with rounds of 78-75-74.
Sophomore Matt Bassler scored a 76 on Tuesday while Nick Brassill put up a 79 to help Loyola leapfrog Boston College in the team standings. The Greyhounds, with nobody breaking 80 for the 54-hole tournament, finished only four strokes out of a tie for sixth overall.
George Washington won the Joe Agee Invitational, posting a 292, the same score at Loyola, on the final day. The Colonials ended the tournament with a team total of 865 while second-place St. Joseph's scored an 870. Loyola, with rounds of 295-297-292, edged out Boston College, Rutgers, James Madison and Georgetown in the strong regional field.
The Greyhounds will be back in action next Monday-Tuesday when they compete at the Crown Plaza Colonial Golf Classic in Pittsburgh, Pa.
