Men's Golf In Third After Day One At Cornell Invitational

Sept. 27, 2003

ITHACA, NY - Will Shriver's even-par 72 has the freshman tied for first and Loyola tied for third after Day One at the Cornell Invitational. The Greyhounds shoot a first-round score of 309 and sit three strokes off the pace heading into Sunday's final round.

It was a windy day on the Moakley Course in upstate New York on Saturday. Loyola came off the course first and held the early lead with Shriver posting a 33 on the back nine. Jeff O'Brien finished with a 77 and T.J. Shuart scored a 79 in his first round.

"Considering the conditions, I think we played very well," says Loyola Head Coach Tom Beidleman. "Wind gusts up to 40 miles per hour kept the scores high but we still finished strong."

David Atkinson registered an 81 and Scott Zielinski posted an 85 to round out Loyola's scoring. Lehigh holds the team lead with a score of 306 while Bucknell is alone in second with a 308.

Joining Shriver atop the leaderboard is Abbie Valentine of Bucknell, Dan McCarthy of Le Moyne and Will Weihiem-Mayer of Lehigh. The second and final round of the Cornell Invitational will take place tomorrow Cornell's Moakley Course.
