Men's Golf Within Striking Distance After Day One At Ping Preview

Owings Mills, Md. - Senior T.J. Shuart posted rounds of 73 to lead host Loyola on Day One of the 2004 Preview presented by Ping/Golweek. The Greyhounds scored rounds of 304 and 303 and sit in 15th place heading into Monday's final round at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Maryland.

Paired up with defending NCAA Champion Ryan Moore (UNLV) and Pepperdine All-America Michael Putnam, Shuart quickly established a presence for Loyola, tying Moore with a three-over par first round tally. Moore scored a 70 in his second round while Putnam had rounds of 70 and 71 to put him in fourth place among all individuals.

Sophomore Will Shriver posted a 74 in the day's first round and after 36 holes, the `Hounds held a one-stroke lead on last year's NCAA champs - the California Bears. Shriver scored a 77 in his second round, the same score as freshman Matt Bassler, who finished with rounds of 79 and 77.

Freshman Chris Derby had the day's most improved round after shooting an 81 to start the Preview, he bounced back, paring six out of seven consecutive holes for a second-round score of 76. Tommy Villani finished with rounds of 78 and 79 and Loyola, ranked 91st in this week's Golfweek national rankings, is eight strokes back of breaking into a field consisting of the nation's top 14 teams.

Oklahoma State leads the stacked field with a four-under par score of 564, TCU and Georgia Tech are tied for second with a 36-hole team total of 567. Texas (573) is fourth and No. 1 Florida (574) round out the Top-5 heading into tomorrow's round.
