Golf Finishes First Day At McLaughlin, Bucknell Tournaments

The McLaughlin Day One Scores | Bucknell Fall Invitational Day One Scores

The Loyola University men’s golf team took on two events for this weekend, splitting the squad between The McLaughlin in Farmingdale, N.Y., and The Bucknell Fall Invitaitonal in Lewisburg, Pa. Loyola finished 14th after 36 holes at The McLaughlin and currently sits in 10th at the Bucknell Fall Invitational through the first day of both 54-hole events.

Five members of the Greyhounds took to the par-70 Red course at Bethpage State Park Golf Course on Friday for the first two rounds of The McLaughlin.

Alex Redfearn (Boynton Beach, Fla./Pope John Paul II) led Loyola with the team’s best round of the day and the only round-under par en route to a tie for 21st after the first day. Redfearn shot an opening round score of 73 before shooting a 1-under 69 to finish with a 2-over 142.

Ryan McCarthy (Silver Spring, Md./Gonzaga College H.S.) shot a 4-over 74 through the first 18 but carded an even-par 70 in the second round to put him two strokes behind Redfearn. McCarthy’s aggregate 144 puts him in a tie for 31st.

Jay Mulieri (Silver Spring, Md./Gonzaga College H.S.) ended Friday in a tie for 51st with a 7-over 147 after following an opening round of 74 with an one-stroke improvement of 73.

Patrick McCormick (Weston, Fla./University School) started strong with a 3-over 73 but shot a 78 in the second round, dropping him into a tie for 69th. McCormick finished the day with an 11-over 151 through two rounds.

Jason Burton (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall College) rounded out Loyola’s McLaughlin squad with a an aggregate 152 through two rounds. Burton opened with a 75 before carding a77 to finish 12-over.

Other members of the Loyola men’s golf team traveled to Lewisburg, Pa., for the Bucknell Fall Invitational at the par-70 Bucknell Golf Club in Lewisburg, Pa. The Greyhounds currently sit in 10th place after the first two rounds of play.

Sophomore Greyhound Jonathan Ross (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) led Loyola at the Invitational with a 12-over 152. Ross opened with a team-low 4-over 74 in the first round and followed with a 78 in the second to put him in a tie for 34th.

The Invitational marked the collegiate debuts of several Greyhounds.

Freshman Andrew McGill (Needham, Mass./Needham) carded rounds of 77 and 76 to finish one shot behind Ross with a 13-over 152, taking him to a tie for 37th.

Freshman Cameron Liebert (Malvern, Pa./Malvern Prep) opened with a 79 but recovered with a 6-over 76 in the second round to tie him for 45th. Liebert finished with an aggregate 15-over 155.

Brendan Lemp (West Hartford, Conn./Northwest Catholic) also made his Loyola debut on Friday. The freshman also carded a 76 in the second round after shooting an 81 on the first 18. His 157 puts him in a tie for 58th.

Will Handley (Coral Springs, Fla./Pine Crest) opened with a 77 but struggled in the second round, turning in a 90 for 67th place after the first day.

Both teams return for the final round of their respective tournaments on Saturday morning.
