Annapolis, Md. - Loyola's golf team shot a two day combined score of 603 to finish in eighth place at the season-opening Navy Fall Invitational, which took place Saturday and Sunday at the par-71, 6,611-yard United States Naval Golf Club.
The Greyhounds placed two golfers among the top-six overall as the team finished 19 shots behind champion, Towson, and defeated 12 others, including William and Mary, the University of Pennsylvania, Navy, and Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) rival Iona.
After finding his team in 14th place at the end of Day One and having shot a 75 himself, freshman Matt Bassler led Loyola's Sunday charge as he fired a three-under 68 to give himself a tie for second place individually and get the Greyhounds back in the mix. Bassler, who was competing in his first collegiate tournament, finished the competition with a score of plus-1, 143.
Senior captain T.J. Shuart finished in a tie for sixth place as he flashed the consistency that has been the mark of his collegiate career by shooting a 73 in Round One and a 71 in the final round to finish at plus-2, 144 on the tournament.
Will Shriver (t-73, 80-78), David Atkinson (t-94, 86-79), and Nick Brassill (t-94, 79-86) rounded out the scoring for the Greyhounds.
Saint Joseph's Sean Seese took home the individual crown with his 72-70, 142 to finish at even par.
Loyola was competing in its first tournament since the 2004 NCAA Tournament's West Regional, which marked the Greyhounds' second consecutive appearance in that field.
Head Coach Tom Beidleman's squad returns to action next weekend when it heads to the Rutgers Golf Course in New Brunswick, NJ for the Scarlet Knight Invitational on September 18th and 19th. The tournament will be Loyola's final warmup before competing in the 2004 NCAA Ping/Golfweek Preview Tournament on September 25th and 26th at Caves Valley Golf Club.
