Sept. 10, 2005

Annapolis, Md. - The Loyola men's golf team opened the 2005-06 season with a round of 308 at the Navy Fall Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The Greyhounds, led by sophomore Matt Bassler, sit 15 strokes off the pace heading into Sunday's final round.

Bassler posted a two-over par 73, leading a trio of Loyola sophomores who scored in the 70's. Chris Derby finished with a round of 76 while Nick Brassill ended the day with a 77.

Junior captain Will Shriver scored an 80 while freshman Blake Furgerson began his college career with an 18-hole score of 89.

"We didn't play up to our potential today," says Loyola Head Coach Tom Beidleman. "Hopefully this will be a wake-up call and we finish strong tomorrow."

The Greyhounds, who trail leader George Mason by 15 strokes, tee off at 8 a.m. on Sunday.
