Annapolis, Md. - Sophomore Blake Furgerson shot a two-under 69 in his first round of the season to lead the Greyhounds on Day One at the Navy Fall Invitational. Loyola, which posted an impressive 290 in its opening round of the fall, sits one stroke back of the leaders with one round left to play.
Furgerson posted a 34 on the back nine after a 35 on the front, and is alone in second place among all individuals. Senior captain Will Shriver put up a 72 while sophomore Michael Mulieri, who led the Greyhounds with a 72.9 stoke average last year, registered a 73 in his first round of the fall.
"I think today was a very good team effort," says Loyola head coach Tom Beidleman. "It was a good start to the fall and I hope we can build on it tomorrow."
Sophomores Chris Derby and Matt Bassler finished with 76 and 77 on their respective scorecards as the Greyhounds sit in a logjam atop the team standings. Twelve teams are within eight strokes of the lead. The Greyhounds, who are tied for fourth overall, are one stroke back of leaders Winthrop. George Washington and North Dakota State.
The `Hounds tee off on Sunday morning at 9:15 - going out with St. Bonaventure (290) and Delaware (291).
