Columbus, Ohio - Senior Matt Bassler paced the Greyhounds in their opening round of the 2008 NCAA Tournament with a three-over par 74 on Thursday in Columbus, Ohio. As a team, Loyola scored a 318 on Ohio State's 7,455-yard Scarlet Course.
Starting on the back nine; Bassler opened the day with a birdie on the 442-yard par four. He also birdied No. 6 and finished one-under in his last four holes to lead the Greyhounds on Day One.
Senior Chris Derby, who only managed one birdie on the day, scored a 79, while junior Michael Mulieri, who finished with 10 pars on his scorecard, shot an 80 to open the NCAA postseason. Mike O'Keefe and Alex Redfearn each scored 85s to round out the Loyola scoring.
The Greyhounds, part of an exceptionally strong Central Region with 16 ranked teams, are one of 27 teams to qualify for the region. The Top-10 will advance the NCAA Championships at Purdue.
Round Two from Ohio State's Scarlet Course will begin at 7 a.m. The Greyhounds will tee off with Cleveland State and Sacred Heart beginning with Redfearn off No. 1 at 12:59 p.m. Derby will be the last to tee off with his starting time slated for 1:37 p.m.
