Golf Claims 10th MAAC Championship Crown; Mulieri Wins Individual Title

April 27, 2008

Orlando, Fla. - Junior Michael Mulieri shot two-under par on Sunday. As a team, the Greyhounds shot one-under par on Sunday. At the end of the day, both Michael Mulieri and the Loyola Greyhounds were 2008 MAAC Champions - the 10th conference championship title in program history.

"I couldn't be more proud of the way the team played today and all weekend," said Loyola Coach Tom Biedleman. "This championship was a tremendous team effort."

Mulieri won McLeod Medalist Honors with rounds of 74-67-70, which equaled five under par over three days at Magnolia Golf Club in Orlando, Fla. The Silver Spring native has earned MAAC Golfer of the Month honors in each month this spring, and came into the conference tournament on fire, winning two spring individual titles and finishing no worse than third overall in the last month of competition.

Mulieri's second round score of 67 was also a career best, bettering the 68 he shot at the 2006 MAAC Championships.

Meanwhile, senior Matt Bassler shot a one-under 71 on Sunday to help the Greyhounds pull away from the field. Bassler's round was his second sub-par round of the tournament. He posted a 69 on Day One.

Senior Chris Derby closed the tournament with a 72 after knocking five strokes off his Round One score to shoot a 73 on Saturday. Alex Redfearn added a 74 for the team score of 287, while Mike O'Keefe rounded out the scoring with an 83.

The Greyhounds are the only team in the field to shoot three sub-300 rounds and led from wire-to-wire with each day's low round. Sunday's impressive round of 287 gave Loyola a final margin of victory of eight strokes over second-place Rider.

The MAAC title is Loyola's 10th overall and fourth in the last eight years. The Greyhounds also won the MAAC Championships at Disney's Magnolia Golf Club in 2003 and 2005.

Mulieri is the second straight MAAC medalist for Loyola. Last season, Will Shriver won the tournament with rounds of 68-72-74. Other Loyola MAAC Champions include Tom Graminga (1990), Tom Lewandowski (1993), Brandon Luckett (1995), Paul Vanzutphen (1996), Jason Cage (1998, 2001), Jeff O'Brien (2003), and T.J. Shuart (2004)
