RALEIGH, N.C. - The Loyola University Maryland golf team battled through the first and only round of the Wolfpack Spring Open at NC State’s Lonnie Pool Golf Course on Sunday, finishing third among the 15 teams.
Loyola led midway through the round, but was unable to hold on to the lead as No. 8 Virginia took the team title with a 4-over 292. No. 33 Clemson checked in second at 7-over 295, while the Greyhounds were one stroke behind the Tigers at 8-over 296. NC State finished fourth with a team score of 10-over 298 and Duke rounded out the top five with an 11-over 299.
Junior Bart George and freshman Matt Oshrine led the Greyhounds through the one-round tournament after steady rain in the area forced Saturday’s two rounds to be cancelled. The duo finished in an eight-way tie for eighth place with a 1-over 73.
Sophomore Jimmy Dengler was third for the Greyhounds, finishing tied for 16th at 2-over 74, while senior Brendan Lemp checked in tied for 26th at 4-over 76 and freshman Connor Flach was tied for 54th at 7-over 79.
Senior Andrew McGill competed as an individual and finished tied for 68th with a 10-over 82.
NC State’s Logan Harrell won the individual title, shooting a 5-under 67, while Lukas Crisp (Francis Marion) was second at 2-under 70 and St. John’s Ryan McCormick was third at 1-under 71.
The tournament was Loyola’s final tune-up before next weekend’s Patriot League Championships at Army’s West Point Golf Course. The three-round event is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, April 26-27.
