Annapolis, Md. - All five starters registered rounds in the 70's as Loyola's men's golf team claimed fifth place at the Navy Spring Invitational in Annapolis, Md. on Sunday. Shooting a team total of 303, the `Hounds finish the two-day tournament with a 608 and head into next weekend's MAAC Championships with back-to-back Top-5 finishes.
Seniors T.J. Shuart and David Atkinson led the scoring for Loyola on Sunday, firing rounds of 75 at the Naval Academy Golf Club. Shuart, who scored a 76 on Saturday, finished with a 151 to tie for 17th overall. Atkinson scored a 158, the same as sophomore Will Shriver, who posted a 78 in his final round.
Freshman Chris Derby had Loyola's top finish, placing fourth with Sunday's round of 77 and a 36-hole score of 148. Freshman Matt Bassler followed Saturday's first round of 78 with a 76 on Sunday and placed 35th overall.
Guilford also shot a 303 in its final round and claimed the team title with a 594. George Washington, St. Bonaventure and Boston College placed second through fourth in the 20-team field.
The Greyhounds will defend their Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference title at Disney's Magnolia Course next weekend. Loyola won the 2003 MAAC title at Magnolia. The first round from Orlando begins on Friday, April 22.
