Annapolis, Md. - Senior captain Will Shriver posted an opening round of 73 as Loyola scored a 304 on a blistery Friday afternoon at the Navy Spring Invitational in Annapolis, Md. The Greyhounds are tied for fourth overall and sit four strokes off the pace heading into Saturday's final round at the Naval Academy Golf Club.
"Given the conditions of the course and weather, I feel like we got off to a good start," says Head Coach Tom Beidleman. "We hung in there and put ourselves in good position to make a move on Saturday."
Shriver's 73 led the Greyhounds with junior Matt Bassler's 76 to back it up. Junior Chris Derby added a 77 while sophomore Michael Mulieri's 78 was the fourth Loyola score of the afternoon. Dropping an 80 from sophomore Blake Furgerson, the `Hounds are tied with Seton Hall in a deep field of 24.
St. Bonaventure leads the pack with a first-round 300, while Longwood (at 301) and Pennsylvania (303) stand in Loyola's way of a fourth team title this season.
The Greyhounds have already won at Navy, opening the fall with a team championship after round of 290 and 286 at the Academy's season-opening tournament.
Loyola will tee off with Seton Hall and Delaware on Saturday morning at 11:05 a.m.
