Patterson, Calif. - Senior co-captain Chris Derby posted a final round 69 to lead the Greyhounds to a team title at the Diablo Grande Golf Invitational in Patterson, Calif, on Tuesday afternoon. Loyola scored rounds of 310-302-302 to claim the tournament championship with a 54-hole team score of 914.
"This was a total team effort," said Head Coach Tom Beidleman. "The golf course played extremely hard due to the high winds and I am so proud of the way this team hung in there."
After two rounds of extremely high winds, Tuesday's final round could be described as breezy with partly sunny skies. Derby, who finished second among all individuals, posted his best round of the spring to give him a three-round 221.
"Chris [Derby] led the way today with one of the best rounds in recent memory," added Coach Beidleman. "He deserves a ton of credit for showing his teammates the way to this win."
Junior Michael Mulieri, who finished sixth overall, ended the tournament with a round of 77 to bring his 54-hole total to 227. Both Keith Hall and Alex Redfearn posted rounds of 78 to give Loyola its 302, while senior Matt Bassler dropped an 80 after rounds of 79 and 73.
The Greyhounds, who win for the first time this spring, ended the tournament four strokes ahead of Austin Peay. Loyola will resume play with its only local tournament on slate this spring - the LaCrosse Home Collegiate in Graysonville, Md. on March 29-30.
