Fort Lauderdale, Fla. - Freshman Chris Derby followed Thursday's round of 72 with another round of 72 to capture the 2005 Fort Lauderdale Invitational at Grande Oaks Golf Club on Friday afternoon. Loyola scored a team total of 292 and finished second overall in its spring opener.
The Greyhounds, who entered the day four strokes back of Evansville, caught the leaders with solid all-around scoring, but were bested by Gonzaga, which posted a team score of 286 to win the tournament.
Derby's 144 led all scorers, but teammates T.J. Shuart and Nick Brassill were close behind with their two-day totals of 146. Brassill scored Loyola's low round of the day with a two-under par 69 while Shuart finished with a 70 to finish in a tie for third place among all individuals.
Senior David Atkinson registered a 74, freshman Matt Bassler fired a 76 and sophomore Will Shriver completed the tournament with Friday's 18-hole score of 77. Atkinson opened the tournament with 79 on Thursday while both Bassler and Shriver scored 77's on Day One.
The Greyhounds resume spring competition at the Kingsmill Intercollegiate in Williamsburg, Va. on Sunday-Monday, March 20-21.
