Philadelphia, Miss. - Junior Will Shriver and freshman Michael Mulieri each posted first round scores of 74 to help Loyola shoot at 303 on Day One at the Pizza Hut Invitational in Philadelphia, Mississippi. The Greyhounds, who sit six stokes back of first-place Winthrop, are currently fourth in the 13-team field.
Playing in unseasonably cold conditions, the Greyhounds got off to a solid start in their second weekend of competition this spring. Mulieria, who led Loyola in last weekend's opener in California, is tied with Shriver, junior team captain. Nick Brassill registered a 77, sophomore classmate Chris Derby scored a 78 and Matt Bassler ended the day with an 82 for Loyola.
"I thought we played well today," says Loyola Head Coach Tom Beidleman. "Our effort was excellent considering the conditions - and the forecast is worse for Monday. Hopefully we can put together another solid round and content for a team title."
Winthrop leads the field with a team score of 297 while host Jackson State is second with a Day One tally of 299. Tennessee-Martin is third (300), followed by Loyola (303) and Southern Illinois (304).
The Greyhounds tee off at 10 a.m. on Monday morning with highs forecasted for 38 degrees with rain and possibly snow at tee time. Monday's final round will consist of 18 holes.
