CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - A day after his near double-double in an overtime victory against Fairfield University, Loyola University Maryland freshman guard Andre Walker was named Lids Team Sports Patriot League Rookie of the Week.
Walker scored 14 points and had a career-best nine rebounds Sunday afternoon at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, as the Greyhounds edged the Stags, 61-59, in overtime at the Brooklyn Hoops Winter Festival presented by Honda.
In addition to Walker's award, junior guard Tyler Hubbard was named to the Patriot League Weekly Honor Roll after leading all scorers with 21 points in the game.
Walker scored nine of his 14 points and had six of his rebounds in the second half or overtime, and he also matched his career-high with five steals against Fairfield.
The award is the second of the season for Walker, making him the first Patriot League freshman to earn multiple Rookie of the Week honors in 2014-2015. He also earned the award after the season's first week.
Walker leads all Patriot League freshmen in scoring this year, averaging 9.8 points per game through 11 contests. He also is third on the Greyhounds in rebounding with 4.5 boards per game, and he tops the squad in steals (16). His 4.5 rebounds per game are third-most by Patriot League freshmen behind teammate Cam Gregory and Bucknell University's Nana Fouland, both post players.
The 6-foot product of Christ The King H.S. in New York City is also ninth in the League in steals per game, 1.5, and eighth in field-goal percentage, .822.
Loyola opens Patriot League competition in two days when it travels to nearby Annapolis, Maryland, for a four o'clock game at the U.S. Naval Academy on Wednesday, Dec. 31.
