Edison, N.J. - Loyola senior guard Brett Harvey (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown North HS) has been named the MAAC Co-Player of the Week it was announced today by the conference office. This is the second time in his career that he has been feted by the MAAC.
In the Greyhounds' history-making 72-67 victory Tuesday at Indiana, Harvey scored nine straight points to reverse a three-point deficit over the final 3:48 and finished with a game-high 25 points. Twice he connected on four-point plays in the second half, the last giving Loyola the lead for good with 1:50 remaining at 69-67. The Greyhounds finished the game on a 10-2 run after facing the three-point deficit.
Harvey finished the game making seven of his 11 attempts from the field and made three of his five three-point tries and eight of his nine foul shots. His free throws with 17.1 ticks remaining iced the game for Loyola. He also added a season- and game-high five assists with four rebounds and a steal.
Loyola opened the game on a 15-0 run and led by as many as 24 in the first half before the Hoosiers roared back to take that three-point lead. Harvey made one of two free throws, stole an inbounds pass for an uncontested layup to tie the game, converted the four-point play to return the lead to Loyola and iced the contest with the free throws.
Harvey was recognized in November 2008 as the league's Player of the Week after scoring a career-best 34 points with six three-pointers in a home win over Tennessee State. He is second on the team in scoring (14.3 ppg) and assists (29) while connecting on a team-leading 23 three-pointers and is 87.2 percent (34-39) from the free throw line.
Siena's Alex Franklin shared the award with Harvey and Rashard McGill from Iona was named the MAAC Rookie of the Week.
Loyola returns to action after breaking for Christmas tonight when it visits Bucknell for a 7 o'clock start. The Greyhounds are home for just the second time in 32 days when they host league-foe Rider on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
