Dec. 21, 2009

EDISON, N.J. - Loyola junior guard Jamal Barney has been named the MAAC Player of the Week it was announced today by the conference office. This is the third time in his career that he has been feted by the MAAC.

In the Greyhounds' record-setting 85-51 victory Saturday afternoon over Howard, Barney came off the bench to score a game- and season-high 28 points while playing just 21 minutes. He did not miss a shot in the second half and scored 16 points during the game-deciding 37-5 run that included Loyola making 14 consecutive shots and ripping off 24 straight points.

Barney finished the game making 11 of his 14 attempts from the field and tied for team honors with five rebounds and four assists. He connected on three of his four three-point attempts and was three of four from the foul line.

Loyola shot a blistering 81.5 percent (22-27) in the second half en route to finishing at 69.6 percent (32-46) for the game. The Greyhounds made their first six three-point shot attempts, ending the game at 75.0 percent (9-12). Both shooting percentages rank as the second-best single-game performances in school history for their respective categories.

Barney twice was recognized in January 2009 as the league's Player of the Week, each of those honors following 40-point scoring performances. The award is the first this season for a Greyhounds player. Barney has taken over the top spot as Loyola's leading scorer, averaging 14.6 points through 10 games. He is also the second leading rebounder at 5.4 boards per outing, is second on the team with 12 steals and tied for third with seven blocked shots.

Fairfield freshman guard Derek Needham was named the MAAC Rookie of the Week for the fourth time this season.

Loyola will lace up the shoes one more time before breaking for Christmas, visiting the Indiana Hoosiers Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. The game will be available nationally on the Big Ten Network and locally on Comcast Digital Cable Channel.
