BALTIMORE - When Loyola University Maryland Head Coach Jimmy Patsos accepted his current position on the Evergreen campus before the 2004-2005 season, there was just one player from the Baltimore area on the roster.
Now, Patsos' team that is 8-1 heading into today's contest at St. Bonaventure University, features three student-athletes from Baltimore City and five more that played high school basketball less than 50 miles from Loyola.
Patsos and his team, with its emphasis on developing strong roots to the Baltimore community, were featured in a lengthy story in The Baltimore Sun today by reporter Don Markus.
Former Baltimore Catholic League Players of the Year Dylon Cormier (Cardinal Gibbons) and R.J. Williams (St. Frances) are joined by fellow former Baltimore Sun All-Metro First Team player Jordan Latham (City) as players from the City.
Six more players played in high school within 50 miles of Loyola, as the crow flies (thanks daftlogic.com): Shane Walker & Tyler Hubbard, Montrose Christian, 32.6 miles; Robert Olson, Georgetown Prep, 33.9; Justin Drummond, Riverdale Baptist, 33.9; Anthony Winbush, T.C. Williams, 43.7; and Erik Etherly, Annandale, 47.9.
Today, the Greyhounds will face St. Bonaventure at 2:30 p.m. in Western New York. For more on the game, click here to read the game preview.
