Edison, N.J. - Loyola junior forward Shane Walker (Northampton, England/Montrose Christian HS) has been named the MAAC Co-Player of the Week it was announced today by the conference office. This is the first time that he has been feted by the MAAC.
Walker recorded his fourth and fifth career double-doubles while helping the Greyhounds to a split of games last week. He averaged 18.0 points and 10.0 rebounds while shooting 57.1 percent from the field (12-21), 62.5 percent from three-point range (5-8) and 87.5 percent from the foul line (7-8).
He posted his first double-double of the season by tying for team-high honors in scoring with 14 points and taking game-high honors with 10 rebounds. He also recorded two steals while playing 33 minutes. In Saturday's win over Mount St. Mary's, he led all scorers with a season-high 22 points and corralled a game-high 10 boards. He made seven of his 10 shots from the field, all three of his three-point attempts and five of his six free throws. He led a defense that held the Mountaineers to 28.8 percent shooting and just 42 points with three blocks while playing a season-high 36 minutes.
Walker has grabbed double-figure rebounds in three straight games and leads the team in that category with a 6.9 average. He already has 18 blocks through nine games, giving him 64 for his career to rank fifth all-time.
This is the second time a Greyhounds men's basketball player has received a weekly honor from the conference office. Freshman guard Dylon Cormier was selected as the Rookie of the Week on November 22.
Walker shared the award with Iona's Mike Glover. Menelik Watson from Marist was selected as the MAAC's Rookie of the Week.
Loyola is off this week for exams, returning to action on Saturday when it visits ninth-ranked Georgetown at noon in the Verizon Center. The Greyhounds are back in Reitz Arena on Tuesday, December 28 when they host Bucknell at 7:00 p.m.
