Baltimore, Md. - Having played six non-conference games to open the season, Loyola gets the MAAC portion of its schedule underway Friday night when it hosts Saint Peter's College at Reitz Arena at 7 o'clock in what will be the conference opener for both teams.
The Greyhounds have a modest two-game winning streak after a pair of home wins last week and will put a five-game home winning streak on the line Friday night. Four Loyola players scored in double figures for the season straight game in the 83-66 win over rival Mount St. Mary's Saturday afternoon. Saint Peter's won two of its first three, but have dropped four straight entering Friday night under first-year head coach John Dunne.
Last year's Saint Peter's matchups featured two of the country's leading scorers in Peacocks all-time leading scorer Keydren Clark and Loyola's Andre Collins. The games this year figure to feature more balance and defense as both teams are allowing less than 65 points per game. Similar to the Greyhounds, the Peacocks have three players averaging in double figures in junior Raul Orta (16.4 ppg), sophomore Kevin Spann (14.4) and junior Todd Sowell (13.7).
The opening MAAC weekend continues Sunday when the Greyhounds travel to Riverdale, N.Y., to take on the defending regular-season champions in the Manhattan Jaspers. The Jaspers are also led by a first-year coach as Barry Rohrrsen has taken over for Bobby Gonzalez who left for Seton Hall.
