BALTIMORE, Md. - Coming off an impressive 80-67 victory over local rival Towson University on Saturday night, the Greyhound men's basketball team opens the home portion of its 2005-2006 regular season schedule on Sunday night when Loyola hosts UMBC in Reitz Arena at 6:00 p.m.
The Greyhounds, who are looking to start the season with a 2-0 record for the first time in six years, will take on the Retrievers for the 40th time on Sunday. Loyola holds a 21-18 advantage in the series, but the Retrievers have won the last two meetings. In last year's 59-53 loss to the Retrievers in Catonsville, Freddie Stanback led the Greyhounds with 16 points, but Loyola was unable to overcome a strong 19-point, 15-rebound effort from Andrew Feeley.
Senior guard Andre Collins was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Co-Player of the Week after leading the Greyhounds to the season-opening win over the Tigers. He scored 22 points and connected on 7 of 18 shots from the floor, including 5 of 14 from three-point range. He hit his first four shots from the floor to score 12 of Loyola's first 20 points in taking a five-point advantage over the Charles Street rival.
Freshman Jawaan Wright also had an impressive debut for the Greyhounds. He was one of four players to score in double figures with 10 points. Wright also added seven rebounds and three steals.
UMBC is 1-1 on the season entering Tuesday night's matchup against the Tigers. The Retrievers opened the season with a win over UMES on Friday before falling to LaSalle on Sunday afternoon. Randy Monroe is in his second season as the Retrievers' head coach.
Sunday's game starts a two-game homestand for the Greyhounds, who will entertain American University on Tuesday night beginning at 9:00 p.m. The game against the Eagles will be televised live on Comcast SportsNet.
